It has been revealed that Zendaya is set to voice one of the most favorite Tunes, Lola Bunny alongside LeBron James in Space Jam: A New Legacy. The news was announced after the film debuted its first trailer.
But this is not the first time the Looney Tunes play basketball. Twenty-five years ago the first Space Jam movie showed us the dream team consisting of the whole package of Looney Tunes, one NBA star, and Bill Murray (oh dear.) This time, Malcolm D. Lee has spoken about one of the most famous characters, the one who was not in previous cartoons.
That's right, Lola Bunny is the one. According to Lee, Lola is reflecting a strong, capable and authentic character. “We reworked a lot of things, not only her look, like making sure she had an appropriate length on her shorts and was feminine without being objectified, but gave her a real voice.” He continued, "For us, it was, let's ground her athletic prowess, her leadership skills, and make her as full a character as the others."
And who better to voice such a strong character than the American actress Zendaya. The Emmy winner was welcomed to the jam with a tweet. “@Zendaya is joining @kingjames and the #TuneSquad as the voice of #LolaBunny in @SpaceJamMovie!” Lola Bunny was voiced by veteran voice actress Kath Soucie in the original Space Jam, with Kristen Wiig voicing her on The Looney Tunes Show. Now is time for Zandaya to hop in. Where would we find Lola? As part of the Warner Bros world, the team behind the movie took advantage of this, and most likely we will see her next to Wonder Woman perhaps. "We wanted to meet her with the Amazons, trying to find greener pastures for herself. As she says in the movie, there's more to her than just being a Tune."
In this new movie, NBA 'King' James LeBron steps into Michael Jordan shoes (no easy task) and the story follows him and his son when they got trapped in a mysterious digital space by the computer algorithm AI-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle)
In A New Legacy, Zendaya stars opposite James, Khris Davis (Judas and the Black Messiah, Atlanta), Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead, Star Trek: Discovery), Jeff Bergman (Looney Tunes Cartoons), and Eric Bauza (Looney Tunes Cartoons) and it is being rumored that like in the first film some special NBA cameos made an appearance, here it will be repeated.
Zendaya most recently starred in the black and white Netflix film Malcolm & Marie with John David Washington. She’ll be seen in another Warner Bros. movie, Dune, and reprising her role as MJ in the third Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Space Jam: A New Legacy is in theaters and on HBO Max on July 16.
