The next Willy Wonka movie has been in the works for five years now. According to the information provided by Warner Bros., this film will explore the early days of the lead character, way before he became the maximum chocolatier we have known. The studio just announced the release date for this film, which will hit theaters on March 17, 2023.
A few years ago, there was some speculation and some names were mentioned to take part of the leading role of the film; specifically in 2018, when the names of Ryan Gosling, Donald Glover and even Ezra Miller were being considered for the part. But since then, all those names have been discarded and the studio has its eyes on “new” faces, in the likes of Tom Holland and Timothée Chalamet.
These are two of Hollywood's most talented leading actors uner 30. Actually, Chalamet just turned 25 years old, and Holland is currently 24. And both have been mentioned as the perfect choice to interpret the eccentric Candy King. So far, it's not clear whether these actors are pursuing the part, but it's obvious that Chalamet would be an excellent choice, if the studios' intentions are to bring a younger version of Johnny Depp to the film.
On the other hand, Holland would be better of a choice, if the studios are interested in portraying a happier version of the character, since the actor is more of a song-and-dance kind of guy. Actually, more like the Wonka version created by Gene Wilder back in 1971. Even though none of the actors have been offered the role of Willy Wonka officially, we can assure that Warner Bros. would only agree to finance this project if one big shot like them would be involved. Especially if we consider that by making the film a reality, this would be considered as one of the first steps toward the creation of a full franchise.
So far we know that Paul King (Paddington) is set to direct the movie, from a script written by Simon Rich (An American Pickle). Obviously, the writer will have to draw inspiration from the classic children's novel by author Roald Dahl intitled Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The next Wonka Film will be produced by David Heyman, who was also the producer for the Harry Potter movies for Warner, in addition of Paddington and its sequel. According to Variety, the studio plans to start the production of this film within the next four months.
Warner has been very reclusive in terms of details of the Wonka film; actually, since this next project will be some sort of origin story for the whole franchise, it remains unclear if we will be able to see the Oompa Loompas' appearance or not. Probably we will discover in this film, how Wonka met them for the first time and the way they ended working for him in the chocolate factory.
