The fact that anime has become so popular among viewers, especially those subscribers of streaming platforms, has spawned a new breed of producers who have focused their new interest in this genre. Case in point, actor Idris Elba, and wife Sabrina, who will join forces with Crunchyroll to create an animated fantasy series titled Dantai. This production will be the first for the couple, who married back in 2019.
This is great news for both ends; for Elba this sounds very promising given the rise in popularity anime has experienced in recent years. On the other hand, Crunchyroll has recently gathered an impressive amount of subscribers; according to some data, surpassed four million subscribers, whilst in the proccess of being sold to Sony's Funimation.
In the summer, Crunchyroll -having passed the three million subscribers mark- added two higher-level subscription types: one of them, an $10 a month “Mega Fan” tier, while the other was a $15 a month “Ultimate Fan” plan. Both new additions have been very successful for the commpany, and according to Crunchyroll they comprise a “significant amount” of the overall subscriber base.
Crunchyroll has been around for 15 years; a time in which the company has become a referent to the anime industry, with more than 1,000 titles and over 30,000 episodes enlisted on the platform. Most of these contents are available in more than 200 countries and territories all over the world. Undoubtedly, Crunchyroll has been leading the anime revolution making adult dramatic animation extremely popular, whilst becoming the epicenter for the next generation of animation fans, according to Joanne Waage, Crunchyroll's GM.
According to an interview given to Deadline by the General Manager, new generations have experienced certain superhero fatigue, thus becoming hungry for new stories and ideas to devour. In that sense, the development by the Elbas is just an example of the company's intentions to work with best-in-class partners, in order to bring in new audiences and tell compelling stories.
Dantai has been described as a “dark fantasy”, as well as an “afro-futuristic science fiction series”. Undoubtedly, a very ambitious production for Green Door Pictures and Pink Towel Pictures, both the production companies of Idris and Sabrina, respectively. According to official information, the animation will be set in a city where the rise of biotechnology has created an “ever-widening gap between the haves and have-nots”.
Over the course of the story, two rising stars -from either side of this huge divide- will be pitted against each other. Dantai's premise indicates that the series will explore such themes as equality and kinship within a corrupt and convoluted society. This animation will align to the principles Idris Elba has spoke in several interviews over the years.
