Not even in our sweetest dreams, we would think Dame Helen Mirren would join the DC Extended universe. Mirren will play the villain Hespera, the daughter of Atlas, in the sequel to 2019's Shazam! from New Line and Warner Bros. Not much is known about Hespera as there's no DC Comics character counterpart but could be based on The Hesperides, who are the nymph daughters of Atlas. The post-credits for the first Shazam saw the villain Doctor Sivana meet an alien named Mister Mind, but it's unclear how this storyline will interact with Mirren's casting as Hespera. Rachel Zegler also joined the cast and she will reportedly play Hespera's sister and “both may or may not be of ill intent”. The duo will serve as the film’s antagonists opposite Zachary Levi’s Shazam.
Helen Mirren has been nominated for four Oscars, winning one for 2006's 'The Queen'. She’ll next appear in “F9: The Fast Saga,” reprising her role as Magdalene “Queenie” Shaw, the mother to Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw. She also played an assassin in 2010’s “RED” and 2013’s “RED 2. Rachel Zegler is known for her role in 'West Side Story'.
Most of the cast is set to come back in Shazam!: Fury of the Gods including stars Asher Angel (who plays teenager Billy Batson, who becomes imbued with the power of the superhero Shazam whenever he says the name) and Zachary Levi, who plays the adult version of Billy whenever he has the power of Shazam: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury. In May 2020, Levi said the sequel was "still on track" despite the COVID-19 lockdown that affected most Hollywood films. "Right now, they're writing an amazing script," Levi told at the time. "I do not have any real details on that. I've some generals and they all sound amazing."
"The only other thing I know is they want to make it as soon as possible because those kids are growing up like weeds, so if we don't do that in like the next two days, they're gonna be full-grown adults," Levi added.
David F. Sandberg is directing the film from a script by Henry Gayden. Shazam is based on the DC character created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. Shazam! the movie was the No. 1 film worldwide on its opening weekend in 2019, going on to earn over $366 million worldwide. Other DC movies coming out soon are 'Suicide Squad', 'The Batman' with Robert Pattinson, 'The Flash', 'Aquaman 2', 'Black Adam', and in the works are 'Wonder Woman 3', 'The Trench', 'Batgirl', 'New Gods', 'BlackHawk' and probably a Joker/Harley Quinn Movie
