This is a very happy development! At least for students of Hogwarts and fans of the franchise alike. According to Variety, the Harry Potter universe will experience another expansion in the form of a TV series, which is currently under development.

Even though, there have been rumors of a TV show set within the wizarding world for a long time, it seems those plans are moving forward finally. Apparently, the stage of this project is currently in a very early development, so there is no information regarding the wrirters or even the cast attached to the TV Series. However, this is great news for the fans who haven't satisfied their hunger for more content on the core series, even after the release of the Fantastic Beasts series.

There is no word yet on what the focus of the tv show is going to be, or what moment in the timeline it will focus on, should it be done. The Harry Potter universe has become one of the most successful franchises of all time. From seven books, which have sold over 500 million copies worldwide, the universe has spawned eight highly successful films. These movies have grossed close to $8 billion worldwide. Also, the Harry Potter universe has been expanded through the release of two prequel spinoff: the Fantastic Beasts film series, with a third on its way to be release in 2022.

In the same fashion as other franchises, this being as successful as it is, has not been without controversy. The creator of this franchise, author J.K. Rowling, recently received an immense backlash on social media, after a series of tweets she made with anti-trans comments; also, she published an extense essay on the subject last june. This is not the only difficulty the franchise has experimented, though. Johnny Depp (who incarnated the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the “Fantastic Beasts” films), left the franchise after losing a libel case against The Sun. The media outlet published back in 2018 an article in which Depp was portrayed as a “wife beater”; this due to a series of allegations of domestic violence made by Amber Heard, his now ex-wife.

The decision behind the development of this tv show is definitely not a surprise for anyone; especially amidst the fiery streaming wars we are witenssing. For a few years now, companies have been mining their most successful franchises in order to stay ahead of the competition. An example of this is Disney, who announced a long list of tv shows to expand properties such as the Marvel Universe, Star Wars, as well as Disney and Pixar Animatin worlds. More recently, after the success of The Mandalorian, Disney announced the production of two spinoffs of this series.

On the other side of the spectre, HBO Max is currently developing several tv shows for the expansion of the DC Comics universe, including a “Peacemaker” series starring John Cena, as a spinoff of the upcoming, and long-awaited James Gunn film “Suicide Squad”.
