Oscars (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences)

Different: How the films are chosen

In past years, the tradition was that films from January 1st to December 31st were the ones eligibles for an Oscar Award but now due to COVID emergencies, many productions stopped. Taking this into consideration, the Academy decided to grant a major alteration to this. All the films released from January 1 of 2020 through February 28 of 2021 were eligibles, providing the chance to those movies with serious issues and with Coronavirus consequences.

Many other ceremonies like de Grammys or the Golden Globes were a little bit more casual because they only had virtual attendance. No such thing will happen in the Oscars. In a recent statement released by Oscar producers, they ask for the attendees to wear 'Inspirational and aspirational outfits'. In other words, extravaganza and over-the-top gowns.

Different: Two Categories converge

Sound Mixing & Sound Editing Are The Same category now. While the general audience might not know the difference, the category is combining editing and mixing. According to the Oscars, up to six statuettes can be rewarded, which can fit “one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers,”

Same: The Dolby Theatre

Since 2002 the Academy Awards ceremony has been held at the Dolby Theatre and this year will not be different.

Different: Multiple Locations

Some presenters and Nominees will stream from multiple locations and this is an obvious caution because there is no way they are going to put so many people in the same place (social distancing be thanked).

The Academy considers 45 seconds is the estimated time to thank everyone involved and this year is no different.

Different: Ceremony's date

This is the first time the ceremony is held so far from winter. The date was pushed back from February 28 to April 25, 2021. The ceremony has been changed other times but moved to the beginning of March and it was because it was Olympic season.

Same: No Host

AP

The Academy decided there is no need for a host. Yet, this decision can be thanks to Kevin Hart and his infamous homophobic comments. It is said that no one wants to host the event because of the level of stress. Even Jimmy Kimmel who has host two times does not want to do it anymore.

Different: Theatrical Run

Netflix

To be eligible, movies needed to have a seven-day theatrical run. If you have not forgotten, (how could we?) Lockdowns were in place all over the world. If The Academy had the lack of wisdom to go through this path and require movies for a theatrical run, for sure it would have been a scandal. Now, movies released on streaming services like Mank (Netflix) are competing.

Same: Live Broadcast

Remember that fiasco with La La Land and Moonlight where the presenters gave the Oscar Award to the wrong movie? It was possible for all of us to watch such an infamous moment thanks to the live broadcast and this year will be no different. Whatever happens, happens.
