Avril Lavigne knew how to play with our feelings hitting us with all the nostalgia. Some days ago the Canadian singer made her debut on a certain platform and surprising us all she had a super special guest.
In case you have been living in the shadows all these days and missed all the magic Avril Lavigne brought to the internet, she debuted on TikTok some weeks ago with one of her greatest songs as background. Do you remember her 2002 hit single Sk8er Boi"? Well, that's the one, and what a perfect way to reference the ultimate skater boy than Tony Hawk himself, who appeared on the short clip. "He was a…" Lavigne wrote in the caption, and we were already screaming.
She lip-synced the song with the ocean as the background wearing a sleeveless black t-shirt with matching shorts and a striped necktie. It really looked that 20 years have not passed at all. However, the surprise came when the chorus of the song started the camera focused on Tony Hawk, with the same tie doing a few tricks on his board.
The "Pop Punk Queen" also shared on Instagram the news posting a photo of herself and the professional skateboarder. "I just posted my first @tiktok with the legendary @tonyhawk… go check it out!" she captioned the images.
The video obviously went viral and many have wondered how come both singular stars met to the video. Avril, knowing that her fans were curious enough, revealed in an interview with her boyfriend Mod Sun that she knew he had to join TikTok but did not know how to make it epic. "I knew I had to join [TikTok], and then was like, what am I going to do? Play 'Sk8er Boi?' Skateboard? I don't know, I'll just call Tony Hawk."
So, how do you approach someone as Hawk? Avril Lavigne went the easiest way and sent him a direct message on Insta, praying to heavens that he read it, "I was like, 'Hey, I'm going to film my first TikTok, would you mind coming over to my house and skate my mini-ramp?' He was like, 'Sure,'" she recalled with a laugh.
Against all odds, Tony Hawk read the message and only replied 'Sure' and days later appeared on her driveway with a skateboard on hand. What would you think if that happens to you? To Avril Lavigne, it was an unbelievable experience. "I was like, 'Is this even real?'" she said. "I was like, 'I feel like I need to be holding a guitar right now or something.' I was like, 'This is pretty epic.' Summer 2021 off to a good start."
Back in 2002, Sk8er Boi" made the singer earn a Grammy nomination for best female rock vocal. About her inspiration behind the lyrics, she revealed that she was obsessed with skateboarding. "I was fresh out of high school, and I just really liked guys that wore skater shoes, like the big, fat ones," she said.
