'The Crown' is not the only one to bring Princess Diana back to life. The upcoming drama film 'Spencer' directed by Pablo Larrain and written by Steven Knight has American actress Kristen Stewart in it and will follow the story of Lady Di back in 1991 when she decided to end her marriage with Prince Charles. Prince Charles married Diana in 1981 earning her the title Diana, Princess of Wales. Together they welcomed sons Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, in 1982; and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, in 1984. Spencer was Diana's maiden name. The Royal couple divorced in 1996 and while Prince Charles remarried Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005 Princess Diana was tragically killed in a car accident in 1997 when she was just 36 years old.
In the most recent photo revealed, the 'Twilight' actress is portraying her character completely, recreating a look that Diana wore in her 1989 visit to Portsmouth, England wearing a tartan blazer over a white turtleneck and even a replica of Princess Diana's sapphire and diamond engagement ring is spotted. Said ring is the one Prince William gave to Kate Middleton when proposed and as a side note, Kate stills wears. The 12-carat Garrard & Co. engagement ring encircled by 14 diamonds is worth approximately $500,000.
Most of the movie was filmed in Germany but according to Collider, they are in the final stage now working in the U.K. Kirsten Stewart has revealed about the film that it is “a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life, It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name: Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”
The actress also spoke back in 2020 about this project and declared she was working on her accent because it was “intimidating as hell” and because Diana's voice was so distinct and particular. She also stressed it was one of the saddest stories to exist ever “I don't want to just play Diana—I want to know her implicitly. I haven't been this excited about playing a part, by the way, in so long.”
'Spencer' is set for release this fall, less than a year before the 25th anniversary of Diana's 1997 death. Jack Farthing plays Prince Charles in the new film, Timothy Spall recognizable as Peter Pettigrew from the Harry Potter films will play Prince Philip and Sally Hawkins who is known for her role in 'The Shape of Water' is also starring here although her role is yet unknown. Director Pablo Larrain has made other films about famous women from history. He was behind the camera of the 2016 biopic Jackie starring Natalie Portman as First Lady Jackie Kennedy.
