After so many years we finally get to listen to news from Shakira. The Colombian singer who you may remember for 'Hips Don't Lie' has released a new music video 'Don't Wait Up' marking her return to English language music since 2016.
Five years have passed since we last listened to Shakira and about it, the singer spoke recently with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 and while there she revealed that she really feels nervous because she is returning after a long break. "I have to say, I'm very nervous because it's my first English song in a long time because I've been focusing on Spanish songs only lately, But this song came about and I'm like, yeah, it's time," she added. "It's time to do this again and I'm happy, and I'm so inspired right now." Shakira has sold over 75 million records which has made her one of the world's best-selling music artists. and Forbes reported back in 2018 that she became the female Latin artist who has sold the most albums in history. So honestly, she should not be worrying at all.
The hypnotizing house track starts slowly but is quickly followed by the catchy lyrics picking up speed. In the video, we can see Shakira surfing and party around full of neon colors. The video was filmed in Tenerife, Spain and the singer noted that being there was very nostalgic but in an awesome way, adding that filming the video took two months and was more than challenging. ”Those scenes of me riding those waves, it was at two in the morning. From two to five in the morning, three hours in the water," she said.
Later Shakira also added that she really does not like cold water and that she really did not want to be wearing a bikini "I made sure that the water wasn't cold because I'm such a chicken for cold water unless I have a full wetsuit. But the director was like, you're not going with a full wet suit on this video. You're going to be in a bathing suit, in a bikini. I'm like, no, no, no, I'm not going to be in a bikini, surfing in a bikini. I'm not that fit. I need to wear something to hold everything in properly, but okay, I'll give you some legs. I said that. So we kind of compromised."
But why a house song, so different from previous music she has done? Well, according to Shakira, she wanted to do something like this for some time now, inspiration hit, and everything else flowed. "It has been living inside of me in some sort of metaphysical way, and it just sort of materialized. But it's been there for a while. I've been looking for the song. I wanted a house song and this song has taken me through so many roads and it has taken me on an adventure, unexpected places."
