Revenge is a dish best served cold, and Lil Nas X must be thrilled to know that his latest single, titled “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” is currently topping the international charts. Currently, the song by the Grammy-Award winner hip-hop superstar, has taken the No. 1 spot on the U.S. and the U.K. charts.
This is not the first time Lil Nas X had a smash hit on the charts; previously his single “Old Town Road”, which featured prominent country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, was able to reign for a record of 19 weeks back in 2019. A mixture of U.S. streaming, radio airplay and sales data are factors to include in the Hot 100.
The song “Old Town Road” is also the second track Lil Nas X has made it into the No. 1 on the United Kingdom's Singles Chart, which factors in sales of downloads, CD, vinyl, audio streams and video streams. “Montero” is the second single to debut at No. 1 this year on the chart after Olivia Rodrigo's “Driver License”. Of course, this achievement in the music industry, not only proves that the former Tik Tok sensation knows what he is doing in terms of how to distribute content, but also that he is not a one-hit wonder.
This also maks Lil Nas X jump over the casualty of being part of the sophomore jinx, and he decided to celebrate this success with a series of tweets. One of these comments was regarding those who criticized him after escaping the lowest point of his life, and said that he would never had a hit song again. Talking about this success, he went on to say that he was able to overcome the fact that everyone encouraged him to stop what he was doing, but savored the fact that he now owns 4 multi-platinum songs and 2 No. 1 songs later, he is still on the run, before thanking his team and fans.
“Montero” is a blatant and sexually charged song, with a title that pays homage to the 2017 infamous film “Call Me By Your Name”, starring Armie Hammer and Thimotée Chalamet. This musical effort has been described as “honest”, “vulnerable” and a confident telling of who Montero has become.
That's primarily why the song has topped the charts, since it has been taken as a true confession from everyone who had enjoyed the song. After all, Montero Lamar Hill is the name of the 21 singer, who was born in Atlanta. But there's certainly another factor that has made “Montero” a hit song: its music video.
Directed by Tanu Muino, the video clip is certainly a provocative stunt that mixes religion and gay-themes. Having these ingredients in the mixture, is what other staples in the entertainment industry have used before to built a prominent musical career as Madonna. To date, the video has garnered more than 92 million views on YouTube.
