Sam McKnight probably has many memorable stories to tell. Working for celebrities like Kate Moss and Lady Gaga and having collaborated with fashion houses like Chanel, Fendi, Balmain, and Burberry. We could not expect less. But one of the main jobs Mr. McKnight had the honor to work with Diana, Princess of Wales from 1990 until her death in 1997. He was responsible for creating Diana's iconic hairstyle.
In a video for Vogue, Mcknight revealed the first time he met Lady Di was on a shot "This leggy blonde comes bouncing up the stairs, smiled and made us all melt, and it was Princess Diana."
Actually, that photoshoot was for Vogue, (what a small world!) and he was trying to make her hair look shorter under a tiara “ I faked it a bit," he said. She was interested in the idea of short hair, after all, she was not called rebellious without reasons. Then, Diana asked him what he'd do if he had free reign and he explained to her that she should go short. "I said, 'I would cut it all off and just start again,'" he added. "It was the beginning of the '90s and it was at the time that I was doing lots of shows and covers and a lot of the girls had short hair, and we were moving from the big frou-frou '80s into the sharp, more androgynous, business chic of the '90s."
"Well, why don't you just cut it off now?'" Diana said, according to McKnight. "So, I cut it off then and we never looked back." The hairstylist never thought his idea would become a trend over decades to come.
McKnight also spoke about his work with Emma Corrin, who portrayed the Princess of Wales in 'The Crown' and recalled that it was his first job after the first lockdown in 2020 but was not so sure about it “I remember when the job came in I wasn't quite sure that I was the right person to do this ... And actually it was a pleasure and Emma was a pleasure, and I was quite taken by how alike Emma was to Princess Diana in her looks. And she was such a lovely girl that any doubts and fears were laid, and I think it's a great cover."
Sam did not stop there, and recalled also a sweet moment between his mom and Princess Diana, demonstrating why she always stole everybody's hearts. "My mum and her friends were standing outside and [Diana] had never met my mum before. So, I think the story goes, one of my mum's friends shouted out, 'This is Sam's mum,' and for some reason, the Princess knew exactly who she was talking about and went over and spoke to her and that made my mum's day," he said. "I think for me that was probably the most pride I've ever felt in my job."
