Can you believe that two of the most prominent actors in Hollywood have never worked together? are obviously talking about Tom Cruise and Will Smith, two movie stars that no matter what movie they are starring, it is a sure thing that movie theaters will be full because fans want to watch them.
When talking about the two of them, Tom Cruise is the senior one not only for his age but for his movies. (He is six years older than Will). The actor has starred in movies such as The Last Samurai, War of the Worlds, Vanilla Sky, Collateral, and of course, the Mission Impossible franchise.
On the other hand, Will Smith has starred in movies like 'Bad Boys For Life', 'Focus', “I Am Legend' and more recently 'King Richard' for which he earned an Oscar Award for Best Actor.
While both have been successful throughout the years, Will Smith admitted in his memoir that he has always wanted to be more and when younger, when planning on how to become the biggest movie star the world has ever seen, he realized he had to compete against someone. Can you guess?
In his memoir 'Will', Will Smith revealed that he wanted to be better than Tom Cruise, but realized he failed because he could not keep up with him. More specifically, we are talking about promotional skills.
In one chapter, Will Smith recalls that he asked Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Bruce Willis back in 1996, how to become a big star. Back in the day Smith was mostly known for being on 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' and was more than eager to take that big step.
"You are not a movie star if your movies are only successful in America," Schwarzenegger apparently told him. "You are not a movie star until every person in every country on earth knows who you are. You have to travel the globe, shake every hand, kiss every baby. Think of yourself as a politician running for Biggest Movie Star in the World."
Smith then went on to write that he took the advice seriously and started to notice other stars were open to saying that they hated to travel. According to the memoir, the actor started to work during the week and from time t time traveled around to promote himself.
Nevertheless, he realized that the one who was doing the same thing as him was Tom Cruise. While Will Smith was only known for his show and his music, Tom was already known for 'Risky Business' and 'Top Gun'.
"I started quietly monitoring all of Tom's global promotional activities," Smith recalled in his memoir. "When I arrived in a country to promote my movie, I would ask the local movie executives to give me Tom's promotional schedule. And I vowed to do two hours more than whatever he did in every country."
The funny side of this story is that until these days, Tom Cruise is well known for being invested in what he is doing, and Will Smith was no competition.
"Unfortunately, Tom Cruise is either a cyborg, or there are six of him," he said. "I was receiving reports of four-and-a-half-hour stretches on red carpets in Paris, London, Tokyo … In Berlin, Tom literally signed every single autograph until there was no one else who wanted one. Tom Cruise's global promotions were the individual best in Hollywood."
