Tom Hanks is one of the most powerful and loved actors in Hollywood, right? Well, Paul Bettany certainly was frightened when on an action scene he made the veteran superstar fart. Both actors are well known for their multiple projects throughout their acting careers. Both shared the screen in the Dan Brown's novel adaptation 'The DaVinci Code' where Hanks had the main role as Robert Langdon, and Paul Bettany played the albino Silas, where he was kind of the bad guy. Bettany told the awkward story on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' and explained that it happened during the first scene both of them filmed together. What an entrance!
Bettany said: "I had to grab him and I had to punch him in the stomach and it's very quiet on set… It's always more quiet when there's a stunt going on because you're worried somebody's gonna get hurt."
The film's cast was superb at the time with Audrey Tatou, Ian McKellen, Alfred Molina, Jean Reno among others. Bettany keeps talking about this experience.
"So, everybody's listening, and I punched him in the stomach and he farted really, really, really loudly. But really loudly. I didn't know what the form was. What do you do when the biggest movie star in the world farts? I kinda looked at him… and he went, 'What is wrong with you? You just made me fart!'" Bettany says he "never reached those heights again" in his career.
Bettany thought it was the first time the story was shared but was surprised when he learned that back in 2019, Tom Hanks told the story in 'The Graham Norton Show'. Hanks explained they rehearsed the scene briefly and that when there are fight scenes in movies, everyone on set takes it very seriously. “Paul came rushing in and I met him, and what had to happen was he was supposed to knock me down against a desk and then I landed on the ground,” Hanks shared. “When I hit the floor, I farted,” Hanks suggested this is why he doesn't do a lot of action scenes.
At the moment, Paul Bettany is in the acclaimed Disney+ series 'WandaVision' from the Marvel Universe. His roles are included in films like 'Solo: A Star Wars Movie' 'Legend' 'Mortdecai' 'The Tourist' and a lot more. While Tom Hanks is working on 'Bios' and 'Elvis' set to release in 2021 and 2021 respectively.
